Re: Hey what's up Dawg? (Generic Chat Thread)

Damn, it still makes you squeamish even to be on the other side of it huh?

Re: Hey what's up Dawg? (Generic Chat Thread)

The idea is supposed to be that you massively reduce the amount of grunt work you have to do in large solutions because everything is made up on the fly, the computer is doing the work for you. This is amazing in theory, but what tends to happen in practice is that it has too limited of an applicati...

Re: Whatcha playing?

You get over horror in VR pretty quickly. While it's really immersive initially, it quickly becomes something you can easily disassociate from. At least for me. So, in that sense, I don't think I've found subnautica that much scarier in VR than I would have otherwise. But it was definitely pretty fr...

Re: Whatcha playing?

I saw it on the switch and was curious, but didn't think too much about it. On your recommendation, I'll check it out. I've mainly been playing dumb games recently. VR prototype stuff and other simple experiences. And I've started playing competitive smash again. So I haven't had time to sit down an...

Re: Hey what's up Dawg? (Generic Chat Thread)

You're at the juncture in CS where you're being taught advanced things for advanced things sake. I would say this *specific* thing doesn't matter. In fact, you may never even use C++ again in your entire career. But, programming frequently does get weird and abstract like this under certain circumst...

Re: The MOVIE Thread

Savage. All you need is prime or something else too?

I'm excited for the new Black Mirror season. Although I've only seen the first one so far.

Re: Veeeeeeee Arrrrrrrrr

I've tried a lot of the arcade type games, space pirate simulator and robo recall. Recall is fucking legit, great game. Space pirate is eh. Then I got Arizona Sunshine, zombie shooter. Sort of like a VR single player left 4 dead. Pretty good but nothing special. Then I tried Keep Talking and Nobody ...

Veeeeeeee Arrrrrrrrr

So I got an Oculus Rift as a (super generous) Christmas gift. I was really skeptical about VR, having not tried it before and thinking it a gimmick. I gotta say, having it now, VR is pretty freaking awesome. And it's tough to play regular games again. Even basic gameplay, like shooters and hack and ...

Re: The MOVIE Thread

WH40K is actual satire. It's excessively grimdark on purpose, originally just to be as silly as possible, since the story doesn't matter much in a boardgame. It's hard to "ruin" because it doesn't have anywhere to go. It's just pointless war, forever. It's like Ragnarok rolled into a space world war...

Re: The MOVIE Thread

Agreed, this movie was a pile of shit. It wasn't irredeemable, but every single time the story was about to do something exciting and new, they did the exact opposite of what made any sense. The writing is really the main culprit. They just really don't know what to do with this series. It's bad fan...

Re: Hey what's up Dawg? (Generic Chat Thread)

There's just a lot of tiny details that can really screw you over. I cannot tell you how many times I've fucked something up, and a really crazy bug happens, and the core reason was an incredibly minor thing like that. As you program more and more, that'll happen less. But yeah, that's why it helps ...

Re: Hey what's up Dawg? (Generic Chat Thread)

Oh yeah, I see the issue here. So, you have to remember that return only returns the value *to the function that called it*. Not all the way up the call stack. Think of it like a dinner plate handoff down a line of people. One person passes it to the next, then to the next, one at a time, until the ...

Re: Hey what's up Dawg? (Generic Chat Thread)

I'll look at it sometime tonight when I get home. Gotta work today. As for how to identify predatory companies, ha, wish I had an easy answer to that one. Most of the big ones just are. But in general, you learn to identify certain buzzwords that mean trouble. If a company is looking for a "team pla...

Re: Hey what's up Dawg? (Generic Chat Thread)

I did little to no side projects. I listed academic course work as my personal projects. I was lucky in that I had an on campus job doing programming, so I had some professional experience I could list. Snatch up that or any internship you can, they can be a decent leg up. I wouldn't worry too much....
