I havent bought the gpu yet. I just built this pc and upgraded from a terrible eMachines pc with a celeron 1.8 ghz, integrated sound and graphics and 368 mb of ram.

the new pc has
p4 2.4 ghz
768 mb ddr

I just need to know whether I should spend the extra 50.00 on the 5700 ultra.

I'm sorry paul, I'm not trying to level up by making multiple posts. I just forgot all of the facts. I kept sending too many posts with too little info. COuld you please read the last post? the one I made before you told me about the multiple posts.

Well I know Nvidia's perform better with D3, but they don't really with other games. I would reccomend an ATI because Nvidia is way too expensive. But I'd ask 3d in terms of performance.

thanx skullz, but I think doom 3 will be the most demanding game I'll play. right now the only other games I have a battlefield 1942 and swat 3. And maybe the nVidia are more expesive, but I have the money, so...

OK, here's the bottom line:

ATi's current line of RADEON Xxx graphics cards are just the fastest cards around due to slightly higher level hardware specifications. But nVidia's new line of GeForce 6xxx graphics cards are more fully featured and flexible in terms of image quality and graphical features due to support for Shader Model 3.0, in other words full DX9C features in hardware and software. But a down side about nVidia's new line of cards is massive power requirements-two slots(one AGP one PCI), two power supply feeds, and a 480W power supply for the 6xxx series is something you'll need. As for ATi, a single slot solution with one power supply feed and a standard 300W PSU is required, that and the fact that ATi card's heatsinks and fans run cooler and quiter than nVidia's cards. As for the last generation RADEON and GeForce cards, same thing basically. So it's really up to you. Each card right now provides the equivelant bang for the equivelant buck.

A 128MB-256MB ATI Radeon 9600 or X300 series graphics card.

just found an info- tek radeon 9600 pro 256 mb ddr. it's only 128.00. SHould I go with this?

someone who loves fps?? is that a good card to get? or should I get the 9600 XT made by Jetway with 256 mb ddr 128 bit for 153? and just to clarify......I wont be able to have an geforce fx 5700 unless I have a 480 watt psu? because you said that the 6xxx series needs a 480 psu, but this is only a 5700.

could someone please help me? I'm asking nicely, lol all I need to know is whether I can run the geforce fx 5700 with a 400 watt psu, and if not, should I go with an ati radeon 9600 xt with 256 mb ram and 128 bit?

I dont care about being called a noob paul, I would just like some help in differentiating between these graphics cards. I've been sitting here quite patiently for about an hour trying to get a straight answer out of you, and you just left. then someone who loves 3d fps came along and gave me a little help, but I needed a little more clarification. When I ask for it, I get no response. All I am trying to do here is buy a grpahics card that will work on my pc and will perform very well. is that too much to ask?!

Someone who doesn't understand basic forum posting methods. Such as posting information in one post needs informing.

My views are simple - bang for buck ATi win - there for I recommand ATi.

There is an edit button in the corner of each post - you can use that to edit your posts.

ok, I know the edit thing. I have edited. I jus havent seen teh delete button. Yes, I know ATI is good, but which ati card will measure up to a geforce fx 5700? a radeon 9600xt? with 256 mb ddr and 128 bit?

I think I'm just gonna buy the albatron fx5700. It's 256 mb ddr, and it has bundled software I like, and there's people that say it's a good card. plus, it's 130.00 cant beat it

Yeah right-Paul edited and merged all your posts for you lol! And there's no delete button unless you start your own topic and no one replies to it. A Radeon 9600 series graphics card will measure up to a GeForce FX 5700 graphics card. With 256MB DDR-II memory and a 128-bits wide memory pipeline interface you mean!

I would wait for the lower GeForce 6xxx series but it's up to you.

Sorry, couldn't resist. But this thread already went to hell, anyway.

Wasn't this thread supposed to direct people to the Q and A forum instead so we don't have technical questions in the Doom III forum? If so, how the hell has it grown to like 7 pages?

Er... to answer that I'll direct you to my agent, Artie McDougle. Artie, tell the good people why the thread was allowed to go out of control.
