"Ported to the PC?" Thats the targeted release platform! Where did you get this information Paul? There are no sources to this news. Oh, and all that port decisions are probably just speculated April fools bull shit (he added this in after people told him it was an April Fools -Paul)...theres no way such a mere system like the PS2 or GC could manage and handle such the complexity in key technological areas that the DooM 3 engine demands. Only a high-end PC or an XBOX could run DooM 3 at a full extent.
The PS2, first of all, is running a 297mhz some western customized CPU, 32MB of RAM, and some crap custom Sony graphics chip that's worse then a GeForce 1, a crap sound chip, etc...besides, the PS2's graphics chip is missing required technical graphics alogrithim specs like DOT3 rendering, stencil buffer, etc. It's no wonder how badily SC chugs on the PS2 because of this and how texture and shading, shadowing, lighting, and specular detail has been lowered to a great extent in SC and the performance isn't anything wild either(i'm talking likely 24fps at good times). While the GC is powered by a Power 405MHZ CPU, 48MB of RAM, a custom ATI R100 eastern chip, etc. The GC still isn't likely powerful enough to render such a complex future-proof engine like the DOOM 3 engine.
Of course; XBOX doesn't have the greatest shot--limited with a 733mhz x86 compatible custom Intel Pentium 3 CPU with 64MB of shared 200MHZ DDR-SDRAM(GC and PS2 also have shared RAM) between the CPU and graphics chip, and a customized integrated nVidia GeForce 3 Ti-500 chip(core speed is 10mhz faster then the PC GeForce 3 Ti-500, just a hair faster lol!), and with an advanced integrated nVidia 3D 5.1 surround sound chip with its own memory and own CPU along with built in broadband capabilities and a 4X DVD/CD-ROM that can run XBOX games(DUH!), DVDs, and Audio CDs/MP3s, and etc, it's no wonder XBOX has a shot and can be capable of running DooM 3 at 640x480 of course with some details lowered.
But it'll still look fantastic. Just take a peek at the GeForce 3's specs: a 256-bit graphics core, a 128-bit DDR memory interfacem 3.2 Billion AA/Samples sec, 800 billion graphical operations per second, up to 64-128MB of DDR VRAM, 7.36GB/Sec of memory bandwith, a 250(260mhz on XBOX)mhz core and a 240mhz memory speed, etc, and most of these features are slightly enhanced with the customized XBOX chip revision.
Of course none of this is anything special or new, but decent enough considering it originates from the programmable shader spec introducing Direct-X 8 / OpenGL 1.3 2001-2002 introduced generation of graphics. Since the GeForce 3 supports the 1.1 spec of Pixel and Vertex Shaders which all contain the proper lighting, shadowing, shading, texturing, animation,(such as environment bump mapping, DOT 3 rendering, stencil shadows, per-pixel lighting and dynamic water refraction and real-time reflections, procedural textures, etc...) ragdoll advanced physics, and morphing techniques for an engine like DOOM 3.
Therefore DOOM can
be ported on XBOX. But of course that experience won't compare to the high resolution(at least 1024x768) amazing high-end featured PC experience that would deliver some amazing performance and quality in DOOM 3, such as utilizing a future at least 3-4GHZ 64-bit CPU, 8GBs of Quad-Channel RDRAM or GDDR3 RAM, the next generation ATI and NVIDIA Pixel Shader 3.0/4.0 and Vertex Shader 3.0/4.0 spec featuring Direct-X 10 / OpenGL 2.0 fully programmable shader featuring next generation graphics chips, Windows Longhorn OS, 12.1 surround sound(I anticipate) and higher next generation EAX or A3D or any other 3D audio accelerated sound renderer next generation 32-bit 196khz+ excellent quality sound fidelity sound chip by Creative or any other high-end sound card chip manufacturing and developing company, and etc. All in time we shall find out what will become of DOOM 3.
