Well Jon, mainly I came out happy that Hotline Miami is getting a squeal. I know, I know it sounds silly because Hotline Miami is a game that doesn't use a lot of resources and big development teams. Although, I am not able to play nor hear reviews about the new games, so I turn to the know games.

In terms of what is new Titanfall is impressive with the animation of the how the titans move, and the ambition of how they are making a multilayer game with Mechs.

Final Fantasy vs xiii becoming final fantasy VI made me a little disappointing because I really wondered what the narrative and the visual contrast of a more 20th century matrix looking game would do against a high magic/techo nature fantasy final fantasy game. Yes it looks cool, but I wonder what the 'VS' thing meant.

I'm glad to see kingdom hearts get another numbered game. I honestly thought that was never going to happen around 2010 because the ds seemed to own kingdom hearts.

Obviously I'd rather no-DRM. Just like I would always no-CD crack my games, cuz putting the disc in for a stupid disk check is annoying, as for online checks, at teh moment it varies. EA have had fantastic record of shutting down old game servers, even within a couple of years of release, and not being able to keep their services online. Microsoft less so, I can only think of two examples they've shut down, Halo 2 and Project Sunburst. Blizzard handle online well, as do Steam.

But out of the choice of DRM like:

Nintendo eShop - download to one machine only. On Wii U cannot transfer licence, if console breaks you're fucked. Can transfer between two DSis or 3DSs, but you need both old and new console, and they need to connect to Nintendo to do it.
PSN - two console activation limit.
Xbox Live as it stands today - unlimited play on one console by anyone, and play on any console you're logged in to.
Xbox One - unlimited play on one console by anyone, share game library with 10 family members, across any consoles not limited to a single household and transfer your licenses to friends (with loaning come up).

I know which I'd pick.

If people think digital sales are insignificant, last week digital sales outsold physical releases for the Xbox in the UK in revenue (often outsells it in volume). So actually only about 3 years behind the PC. I think it was 2010, when digital outsold physical on the PC.

Microsoft are definitely appealing to a broader audience, I still work in games retail, and lets just say the market is shrinking... 2 out of the 4 stores I've worked in over the last 10 years have closed, the only games that sell any sort of volume are CoD and Fifa, I'm sure everything else struggles to make any money, old games heck, most places don't stock any sort of back catalogue and flog pre-owned as far higher margin - in volume, I suspect most games specialists sell 3 or 4 times as many pre-owned games as new - that's a big problem for the industry, and goes a long way to explain why over 30 studios have closed in the last 2 years.

Allow me to argue why nobody cares about the wii-U. It can't fucking play Madden, GTA, or Call of Duty.

I think it's clear that's what they're trying to do. Like Ransom said, they probably aren't interested in competing for the hardcore demographic with Sony.

The problem, ultimately, is that we aren't their target for this console. Which is fine, they don't owe us some kind of debt. But the problem is, they are aiming for an audience that seems more hypothetical than real. Sure, people want digital games, they're convenient. But do these casual, digital gamers want a dedicated machine that owns their whole living room? Not necessarily. More problematically, they need to attract people who know how to make games for this new audience, and they haven't done that yet. A console, after all, is only as good as the games it has.

If I had to sum it up quick, I think you're right when you say that they're appealing to a broader audience. But it's still just a gaming console, which makes it an inferior device to most other devices people already have. I think they're overestimating how much people actually want a device like this in this kind of economy.

As for the pre-owned thing, I'm well aware the bugbear developers make out of it. But since it's existed literally as long as the industry has, I'm pretty sure it has not suddenly become a threat. Nothing has drastically changed on that front.

Now, what HAS changed is that development costs have become fucking asinine. When Bioshock Infinite costs over a hundred million dollars to make, when Tomb Raider 2013 sells 4 million copies and that's considered a failure, well, it becomes a bit easier to understand why studios are closing left and right.

Ultimately, publishers have become bloated and inefficient. And, as is typical in a corporate structure, they're willing to blame everything and everyone but their own stupid behavior.

Cracking down on pre-owned games is just another squeeze on the consumer, with pre-owned games themselves already being an outlet to the asinine costs it takes to maintain this simple hobby. The pre-owned market probably would probably barely exist if the console scene had the kind of sales that Steam regularly does.

I think publishers have become arrogant. They don't think they have to bring a product or provide a service that appeals to their audience anymore. They're under the impression that they can just shovel shit without long-term consequences.

I think they're about to be taught a harsh lesson when consumers realize that they have cheaper, better alternatives.

just a little point to add to this—it's very likely that tomb raider's 'failure' has less to do with how well that game was expected to sell and more with how badly squeenix's other games were doing around that time. tomb raider had to make up for other games' disappointments, couldn't, and so it got used as a scapegoat.

which is a whole other kind of embarrassing

kinda sad we won't get to see how their tech would've performed in practice to be honest

now xbone has even fewer things to differentiate it from the ps4 which has a massive head start in goodwill
