okay what the fuck, time to talk about the election fam

Post by youdiedtooeasily » Mon Oct 10, 2016 03:11

What the fuck is going on in our country? This is such a joke. Thoughts?

I handle the debates like sit-coms. I'm legitimately worried for my military fam still out there. I think we are willingly going to go back into a recession. Hold me senpai.

I'm not voting this time honestly. love it or hate it, I'm just being honest. this is entirely absurd. you can wave the whole "men have died to give you the right to vote yada yada yada speech", but as like one of the only vets on here, that doesn't mean shit when addressing this absolute satire of an election. it's fucking embarrassing tbqh.

Discuss.

There's nothing to discuss.

If you vote for Trump, you're an idiot. If you vote for Hillary, probably nothing will change. 4-8 more years of Obama, more or less. Third parties are a waste of time in a winner take all system, and they're all terrible anyway.

I'm reminded a lot of George Carlin's "I don't vote" bit.

I watched the second debate as an outsider looking in and was thoroughly embarrassed for this country.

I guess y'all are right though, there isn't much to cover. it's a shitshow.

I liked the Carlin bit there. it's honestly disturbing how we came to these picks. but he makes a point.

the only thing I got out of it was the Syrian issues. I have a feeling that's a ticking time bomb and you just know we'll be the ones to fly over there and world police it.

We're beyond that point now that Russia has staked a claim. Like Ukraine, it would be a mistake to overcommit and piss them off. They're itching for war and it would be a disaster to give it to them. They basically have had Trump as their President for decades now and are hopelessly fucked up.

What's really irritating is that the world is more complex than ever before. We really need a president and a Congress that can take this shit seriously and is willing to take the country in a seriously different direction

Hillary is competent enough to do that, but can't because Republicans will block her out of spite the same way they've done to Obama since 2010. She also most likely won't, since she's not really that interested in change.

Still, it is imperative that the orange sociopath not be elected. Not even so much because he would wreck the place, his damage could likely be minimized by intransigence, but because his followers are looking for any excuse to start goose-stepping, and they need to lose this election so they can learn no one has the stomach for them.

i don't think there's a chance he wins. a few months ago i thought he was a lock, but everything i've seen shows him losing handily now. it'll be a miracle if he wins IMO. he probably had this election in the bag early on, but we don't vote that way. he built his campaign on the kneejerk reaction to a corrupt and broken system and now that the dust has settled and he's continually shot himself in the foot his campaign is going down the gutter. time has not been kind to him.

You have a point, Russia has the upper hand in this situation. Makes sense why Trump has a tendency to want to lend a hand over there to fight ISIS or whatever, which will be us invading Iraq all over again from a military strategic standpoint.

I agree, our foreign policy is probably decades behind the other major nations. The odd thing is I think we need a hybrid of Trump and Hillary with dropping all the sleazy politician personal gains and corruption to balance Congress but that'll never happen. I agree, I think Hillary is Obama for the next 8 years and the right is going to piss and moan about every proposal if she wins and vice versa if Trump pulls the upset.

I just find this current state of our political system as a colossal joke, hell the fact a person like Trump is even in this position is hilarious and also quite terrifying. Is it a millennial issue? Did the rise in social media affect this? I think our parents' generation have been "trumped" out of the race and it's mostly our generation that allowed this to happen, but I'm not the most versed on the subject so I'm not going to make any drastic claims. Just a thought that crossed my mind.

I respect Trump's business ethic and that's how we was able to campaign his way through his opponents and make it to this spot but I don't think he is in any way professional enough to take the oval office seriously. I plain just don't trust Hillary and am not exactly open to another 8 years of Obama. It's just alarming how the two made it here and baffling how hive-minded people are in this country to simple marketing techniques through the media. We as a collected society chose those people and then complain, it's actually kinda funny in a sick sense.

It's just so shameful to watch these two bicker back and forth for an hour and then finally talk out of their asses for 20 minutes of the actual policies they propose for a solution which you know is just to sway voters and will most likely never happen. No professionalism or merit, just playground like bullying tactics. I think of the debates as a dark comedy called 2016 Presidential Debate on HBO or something, but it's actually real.

I agree kob. I've been following 538 pretty closely and while the election was close not that long ago, it's basically hopeless for Trump now. They have his odds at like 15%. He'd basically need to win every swing state and take a couple Hillary is protected to win. The polls haven't been that wrong in, well, ever.

I disagree ytmnd. Trump has basically been a two-bit conman creep his entire life.

From Trump Steaks, to Trump University, to Trump Mortgage, to his dozens of failed casinos, to his over 3600(!) lawsuits, basically one every day, he is the epitome of a sleaze bag piece of shit. He literally did the same thing as Ben Carson and gave speeches for those cult like multi level marketing companies.

You can't trust Hillary, but you can always trust Hillary to be Hillary. That's the way I see it. Democrats are just a boring, center right, neoliberal, corporatist compromisers. They're a little sleazy, but they're fucking saints compared to their opposition, and they've proven themselves as effective administrators.

Whereas Republicans are right wing extremists to the core and have fucked up everything they've touched for decades. The only effective presidents they've had in the past 50 years were Nixon and Bush Sr. And Nixon was a crook and they hated Sr so much they voted him out after his first damn term.

Trump didn't come out of nowhere. It wasn't a mistake that he made it this far. This is what those people want! You of all people I'm sure have seen the fucking yahoos this country has to offer. A huge minority of this country, 30-40% of us, are fucked in the head, period. From conspiracy theorist Alex Jones types to fundamentalist creationist idiots to alt-right white supremacists and neo-Confederates, this country is filled to the brim with irredeemable morons.

Trump isn't an aberration, he's just voicing what these people have been saying in private for years. And it's not like Ted Cruz or the others were much better.

grab those pussies Smith!

I respect his business ethic but I'm not a fan of it by any means, just to clarify. He's the ultimate example of sleaze but I have to give him credit for finding all those tax and business deal loopholes to make himself rich enough to legitimately run for President. Not many wealthy people could pull that off without that kind of slimy business direction. Is it dirty and unprofessional as hell? Oh indeed! But he got away with what the laws Congress set in motion so I can't really blame him for doing so.

I sat in silence and thought about this segment for a good while. You're right. It's appalling, your'e absolutely right. It's like a horrible mixture of uneducated lemmings following a false prophet off a cliff in search for sanctity. And its only going to get worse.

Hey what's up, how's it going. Preface, Everything is complicated, and convoluted, but it is now a lot less convoluted because the net is cleaning up everything.

Also you have to realize that the fact we have an election every 4 years and people transfer power from one group to another is amazing because that doesn't happen in history.

What's going on with our country?
A lot of things that people thought were gone, raceism, sexism, and classwar are being brought front and center to a the public in such a blunt way it is like a punch to the face for a lot people.

Military: the early OO's were really bad. I remember people talking about losing trust in government because we were blowing up our own people. Now there is more care about our army in the field, and we use drones more now, but "you can't beat a country by bombing it to death. "

The 2008 the recession revolved around homes which are many people's biggest asset, if there is a recession again, it may not be as bad? because people lost those homes, and more people are weary of the housing market. Also the thing is the economy is getting better, but normal people don't feel it because business want to put the squeeze on you.

You should still vote. Just keep it up as a habit. If you don't vote you lose that habit and then as things go along you are just making things worse for yourself.

There are probably some propositions you might find interesting to vote on, so check it this link.

There was a dude named Tocqueville who pointed out a long time ago that what makes American democracy's successful is that we worry a lot about things in the short term which makes things better in the long term.

Welcome back from the dead!

Thanks for your input. I find the scariest part is in 4-8 years there won't be an internet since it will be entirely censored and policed beyond repair. I'm generally rather neutral on most topics but I am a huge advocate for freedom of speech and despise censorship. I think places like 4chan and the deep web are a crucial component to our society and there is undeniable proof around the globe of freedom of speech being threatened.

I like the thought of the transfer of power every 4 years, that's a nice system. But when you "pass the baton" from a corrupt asshole to another corrupt asshole, that only operates for self interest instead of the glaring societal issues you've mentioned, it becomes an absurd joke and hard to take seriously. Nothing really gets done, it's all talk and no follow through. They just want those checks for life and satisfaction to their colossal egos.
Jon0101 wrote:A lot of things that people thought were gone, raceism, sexism, and classwar are being brought front and center to a the public in such a blunt way it is like a punch to the face for a lot people.
I agree 100%. Racial tension is at a boiling point (BLM, Islam), political correctness has overstayed its welcome, the definition of "sexist", "racist" and "bigot" have lost their meaning due to improper over-usage, classwar I'm not too familiar with but will look into it, the misinformed presentation of these problems is completely the medias fault yet no one will come out and admit it, SJW takeover of college campuses is making people dumber after they graduate, students are not learning, just being told how to think and talk and professors have severely limited what they read and watch to force a narrative (even the college I go to is doing this and it pisses me the fuck off), safe spaces, trigger warning crap.

I agree, "bombing everyone to death" isn't how to defeat an opponent like ISIS.

I suppose you have a point if another recession happens. I don't feel like the economy is getting better but perhaps it is the "business squeeze" putting us in the stranglehold.

I'm going to watch the debate tonight and probably immediately be inclined to drink heavily afterwards. I'm down to vote on proposals, I just don't think I could live with myself voting for either God Emperor or Killary to put it kindly.

Thanks for providing the list though, I'll check it out.

What are you talking about with regards to internet censorship or political correctness? Like, the internet is clearly not going anywhere. It's perhaps more uncensored and crazy than it's *ever* been.

Also, it's been a few years since I've been in college, but it wasn't my experience at all that people were running around censoring people or some dumb shit like that. People tend to be oversensitive babies, but it's usually just a self-righteous phase people go through in their 20's. I don't see it as a problem at all.

I think the larger conversation about social justice is really, really important. Particularly in this election, because I don't think the media misrepresents it at all. If anything, they probably undersell it.

A good example is all the police killings of unarmed men that keep making the news. There were reports for decades of that happening, but no one ever believed the people it happened to because they were typically poor, non-white or both. The popularity, and non-censored nature, of the internet has allowed undeniable evidence of shit like that to explode in a way that's undeniable.

Similarly, I think women's issues are finally being heard after decades of having no popular representation in the media. Even watching old tv shows from the 90's can be fucking cringe inducing when you realize how far we've come. A lot of that shit goes overboard, but so what. Feminists of one stripe or another have been saying ridiculous shit for a hundred years, and no one takes them seriously. But the ones who do raise legitimate points typically get lumped in with the rest for nakedly partisan reasons.

The gender divide in the voting populace this election is literally unprecedented. Women basically aren't voting for Trump. Not literally of course, the divide is like 70-30. But electorally speaking, there's never been a divide that large, it's the first time in American history. And obviously, it's not hard to understand why.

Even if you don't like "PC" stuff, which I don't even think is a real *thing*, just something people whine about, Trump is a completely bigoted piece of shit who very likely did sexually assault women. Not hard to understand why he's not winning the female vote.

In any case, Hillary is very clearly going to win and we're probably going to have 4-8 years of another Obama equivalent. That is to say, a President that will do jack shit because she'll be obstructed at every turn by Republicans about literally everything, no matter how mundane.

The real story over the next few years is what twisted monstrosity the right-wing is going to turn into now that traditional Republican bullshit is dead.
