Review: Mass Effect (360)

Post by Damondo » Tue Jan 06, 2009 13:55

Storyline: 9/10
Mass Effect is set in the year 2183 AD. Thirty-five years prior, humanity discovered a cache of technology built by a technologically advanced but long-extinct race called the Protheans. Studying and adapting this technology, humankind has managed to break free of the solar system and has established numerous colonies and encountered various extraterrestrial species within the Milky Way galaxy. Utilizing alien artifacts known as "Mass Relays", the various space-faring species are able to travel instantly across vast stretches of the galaxy.

Graphics: 8/10
Graphics are what you would expect from your typical 360 game. Although there are times where the skins on armor are not fully rendered and take a few seconds to come to. Not a big deal but sort of a letdown considering the capabilities of the machine. Other than this minor issue, it looks just like it should. Good.

Sound: 8/10
Nothing out of the ordinary here.

Gameplay: 8/10
If you played any of the KOTOR games, you will feel right at home. Character movement is a bit sluggish in my opinion but you do adapt rather quickly. After your stay in Citadel you spend most of the game traversing the Milky Way. Your travels land you on different planets where you can survey for rare materials and complete the games quests. Not all quests are linear so you are pretty much able to tackle whatever you want at your own pace.

Major Pro's:
Extensive weapon and armor array. Lots of quests and side quests. Reminiscent of the KOTOR days.

Major Con's:
Aside from the graphical rendering delay, theres not much to complain about. Landing on the various planet maps seem small and limited. Majority of the combat is outside which gets tedious sometimes. Navigating the "rover" could have used a bit more tweaking. Controls in this regard to seem a bit clunky and does have a bit of a learning curve to master.

Overall: 8/10
If you like the KOTOR space themed RPG genre you will enjoy this game very much. I did.
