dying vs living at the end
so I'm wondering what your opinions are on the protagonist dying or living at the end?
I personally like dying when the protagonist's struggle, effort and all that stuff was strong. to know he/she did all he could but failed in the end is pretty sweet to me. however some people think dying at the end means there was no point in the books (which I find a little silly)

.
Everyone dies eventually anyways. If their death is included in the story, then cool.

There's a saying, it goes something like "it's the process that matters, not the outcome"KnightofBane wrote:however some people think dying at the end means there was no point

I like it more when it's kinda like sacrifice, like if they give themselves up to save everything.

Re: dying vs living at the end
i like it when endings are appropriate to their stories. i personally lean toward tragic fiction but that's more a general preference.
if an ending goes out of its way to be happy and make everything work out All Right despite such a resolution being completely at odds with the mood or direction of the rest of the film - i am legend's theatrical ending, for instance, or to a lesser extent stranger than fiction's - this really bothers me. but usually that has less to do with the protagonist living and more to do with the ending in general. but by the same token if the protagonist dies just for the sake of shock value or other equally spurious reasons then that's just as painful.
a strong ending is great, but it is more important that it is appropriate. if the conclusion does not feel emotionally satisfying, or even thematically resonant with the rest of the film, then the entire experience is soiled. this is the case with all traditional fiction.

i agree with you ransom. however, it bothers me when people ignore an ending or think it's bad just because the main character dies
